We had a good year. A successful mission trip to Malawi Africa at the CLI Hospital and the Sponsel Foundation Eyes of Africa Clinic in September 2016. We screened over 200 patients and performed 50 surgeries plus multiple lasers. A team also went to the Salud y Paz clinic in Guatemala in February 2017 for a week. They screened 161 patients and performed 58 surgeries, 10 of them children.
The Sponsel Foundation is now gearing up for a mini eye camp in Malawi Africa in early June 2017. We will follow that up with a 2 week eye camp in August 2017. We hope to screen over 200 patients and perform up to 75-100 surgeries as well as perform many sight saving laser procedures.
The Sponsel Foundation is currently setting up an eye clinic in a hospital in Cichicastanengo Guatemala , much like the clinic in Malawi. Our foundation wants to help sponsor a local Optometrist to live there and run the clinic year round. We would invite any ophthalmology teams to utilize our eye center and the Optometrist that oversees the clinic can perform any follow up to the patients once the teams have left. This will be a valuable service to the people of this region. We are currently sending donated equipment over there. If you have any Ophthalmology equipment to donate, please contact me at 210-223-9292. We will be naming the clinic The Roger Lytle Eye Center in honor of Dr. Sponsel’s grandson who passed away.
Our Foundation will be opening a free children’s eye clinic in downtown San Antonio in the summer of 2017. We will invite local Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, and Ophthalmic technicians to participate. We will start off with a Saturday morning clinic bi-annually. This will bring specialized Pediatric eye care to the uninsured Children of the San Antonio and surrounding communities.
The 3rd annual EYEBALL BOOTS AND BLING is right around the corner. It will take place on October 7, 2017 at Pedrotti Ranch. Live music, silent auction, BBQ dinner, Raffle and plenty of fun. If you want to purchase a table please call me at 210-223-9292. You can purchase tickets on our website or by calling the same number and asking for Janelle.
I want to thank our mission team members who participated with the Malawi eye camp and the Guatemala mission trips in September 2016 and February 2017. It was successful because of the caring and skilled individuals that gave their time and compassion to help these patients truly obtain sight for life.
All of your gracious donations help the Sponsel Foundation to sponsor these mission trips abroad and the children’s eye clinic here in San Antonio. It is your way you can help bring sight to many of the people in San Antonio, Africa and Guatemala.
